Flow curves of colloidal dispersions close to the glass transition. Asymptotic scaling laws in a schematic model of mode coupling theory.

چکیده
The flow curves, viz. the curves of stationary stress under steady shearing, are obtained close to the glass transition in dense colloidal dispersions using asymptotic expansions in the schematic F₁₂(γ)-model of mode coupling theory. The shear thinning of the viscosity in fluid states and the yielding of glassy states is discussed. At the transition between fluid and shear-molten glass, simple and generalized Herschel-Bulkley laws are derived with power law exponents that can be computed for different particle interactions from the equilibrium structure factor.

متن کاملScaling laws in the rheology of colloidal dispersions
In this thesis, starting from a schematic mode-coupling model, the dynamics and the ow behavior of colloidal dispersions under stationary shearing close to the glass transition is analyzed. Both analytical and numerical methods are applied. The most important control parameters of the model are the shear rate and the separation parameter measuring the distance from the glass transition point. A...
متن کاملTransient stress evolution in repulsion and attraction dominated glasses
We present results from microscopic mode coupling theory generalized to colloidal dispersions under shear in an integration through transients formalism. Stress strain curves in start up shear, flow curves, and normal stresses are calculated with the equilibrium static structure factor as only input. Hard spheres close to their glass transition are considered, as are hard spheres with a short r...
متن کاملAsymptotic analysis of mode-coupling theory of active nonlinear microrheology.
We discuss a schematic model of mode-coupling theory for force-driven active nonlinear microrheology, where a single probe particle is pulled by a constant external force through a dense host medium. The model exhibits both a glass transition for the host and a force-induced delocalization transition, where an initially localized probe inside the glassy host attains a nonvanishing steady-state ...
متن کاملGlass transitions and shear thickening suspension rheology
We introduce a class of simple models for shear thickening and/or ‘‘jamming’’ in colloidal suspensions. These are based on the schematic mode coupling theory ~MCT! of the glass transition, having a memory term that depends on a density variable, and on both the shear stress and the shear rate. ~Tensorial aspects of the rheology, such as normal stresses, are ignored for simplicity.! We calculate...
